Some of the Residents of Henderson, Nevada

Saturday, March 17th, 2012

3-17-12Katy, a 9th grader from Basic High School in Henderson understands kindness. Talking with her was so refreshing. One would think she has a PhD in kindness. She shared many insights about her school and is thrilled to tell everyone she can about The Kindness Certificates on this website. She was so happy to learn that I was “putting her in charge” to spread kindness to all of Nevada. Thank you so much Katy and keep it up the rest of your life.
Robby and his grandmother, who has had a lifetime in the education field thought it was imperative that he learn about Heroes by talking with me. I loved hearing her story of working in the education system. She still has some active connections and is going to spread the word.
City of Henderson Fire Chief, Steven Goble and all of his men had such great words of praise for The Kindness Bicycle Ride for Heroes. I talked with them before lining up for the Saint Patrick’s Day parade. I received an invitation to visit all of their Firehouses. What a wonderful honor.
The winds returned to southern Nevada, with frequent 50 mph wind gusts which made riding downright dangerous. I’m nearly right on the mileage total with the two “century” rides thus far.
“Spring Kindness” begins in three days. The object is to tell as many people about One Million Acts Of Kindness as you possibly can. This idea of “Springing Kindness” into people’s lives is being spread in big ways by culinary philanthropist, Spring Hope of Santa Monica, California.

The Las Vegas Strip

Friday, March 16th, 2012

3-16-12The Kindness Bicycle Ride for Heroes has a few more days left in Vegas until we head south into Arizona. During my two weeks here, I have ridden the length of the strip a couple of times but never at night nor a weekend. This Saint Patrick’s eve the streets and sidewalk were gridlock. I felt it best, for safety sake to remain stationary. Doing so, I met some of the nicest people. Dennis and Ann from Columbus, Ohio, who posed with The Kindness Bicycle are here for the weekend and are very involved in helping Wounded Warriors. Dennis has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars by arranging corporate sponsors to commit to support his benefits which center around skeet shooting. You could tell the passion in both Dennis and Ann’s voices as they talked about the Wounded Warrior benefitting because of the help of others.
In four days, on the first day of Spring, it is time to tell as many people as possible about One Million Acts Of Kindness, in an event called “Spring Kindness.” Friend, Spring Hope is getting many people involved in this idea of hers. Thank you, Spring!

Clark County School District, Nevada

Thursday, March 15th, 2012

3-15-12Every school district across the country should have a TJ working for them. TJ is a woman with a huge passion for making schools safe for children. She was thrilled to learn about the Kindness Certificates and the possibility of them spreading across classrooms throughout her state and beyond. She is going to help spread the word throughout the Clark County Administration Offices. Spreading to the schools in this state will have to be done one at a time as that is how the State of Nevada works. I will try and make inroads as best as possible with other methods.
“Spring Kindness” is a recent idea of a friend, Spring Hope, from Santa Monica. She has a wonderful “take on the world” attitude as she helps to spread the word of One Million Acts Of Kindness to everyone. On March 20th, the first day of spring, she is urging everyone to “Spring Kindness” to everyone you can. “Turn it into a competition,” she says. Compete, to tell as may people as you can to embrace One Million Acts Of Kindness as a lifetime goal. The countdown is on…T-minus, 5 days until “Spring Kindness” and counting.

Message From the Top

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012

3-14-12When a message comes from the top, the message carries more clout. As luck would have it, North Las Vegas Fire Chief, Al Gillespie just so happens to be President and CEO of the International Association of Fire Chiefs. The bit of short term bad luck is that he is out of the office until next week. Can you imagine a message from Chief Gillespie I can carry to classrooms across the country and the impact it will have? It truly will not get any better! I will remain in the Las Vegas area to be able to get a few minutes of his time. This is a huge opportunity and well worth the wait to be able to speak with this man about Hero Firefighters across the nation.
Today, the ride to the North Las Vegas Fire Department Headquarters was as if I was in a parade as people shouted that they had seen The Kindness Bicycle on the news. My favorite vignette was Gina, a young woman with four young children insisting on buying me lunch; she had seen The Kindness Bicycle on TV a couple of times. She and I talked about her brother Erik who is currently serving his SIXTH deployment in Afghanistan and Iraq. That put everything I am trying to accomplish, in perspective. Thank you Erik, from all of us.

Let the Message of Kindness Spread to All Schools

Tuesday, March 13th, 2012

3-13-12This morning, the wheels were put in motion to have One Million Acts Of Kindness be a part of schools across the State of Ohio. My long awaited phone call took place this morning with the powers that be in the State of Ohio Education System. The conversation left me extremely honored.
I need to keep under my hat what is going to take place, but it is what I have been working on day and night since the Virginia Tech tragedy nearly five years ago. It is time for kindness as an ever present mindset in every child in this country. Ohio is going to take the lead on this.

Century Ride for LVMPD Sgt. Henry Prendes

Monday, March 12th, 2012

3-12-12Las Vegas Metro Police Department Sgt. Henry Prendes was killed in the line of duty during a Domestic Violence call. It is because of my Domestic Violence ride this summer and his deep religious convictions, that I felt such a strong connection to Sgt. Prendes. The respect from the community was so obvious as I rode through all parts of Las Vegas. One of the memorable moments was riding past a line that was 4 people wide for 2 blocks, waiting to get into the “Pawn Stars” shop. The first few people started cheering and applauding The Kindness Bicycle and it continued like a wave the length of the line.
Laura Meltzer, Police Information Officer took the time to meet me at 6AM at the Police Memorial Park to start her day a couple of hours early. Riding to honor a Hero from her Police Department took precedent over everything else this morning. Ray Flynn, Assistant Sheriff of the LVMPD, also took time from his extremely busy schedule to talk with me and pose with The Kindness Bicycle. The miles were very tough today with steady winds and gusts at 30mph. It seemed that no matter what direction I rode, the wind was blowing in my face.
Las Vegas Sun reporter Jackie Valley and photographer Leila Navidi are putting together a very nice article for the Sun. Thank you to both of you for helping to spread the word of The Kindness Bicycle Ride for Heroes.
Nick, a cameraman from Channel 8 met me at 6AM as well, he was truly a consummate professional.
Travis from Channel 13 and a news crew from Channel 3 both did a piece on my ride today. Travis was a blast to work with. You got to love a guy who has an Anchorman bumper sticker of Will Ferrell on his car. It was a “hat trick” of TV stations, a first for The Kindness Bus Tour, I know Laura Meltzer had something to do with it. Thank you to everyone for helping to honor Hero, Sgt. Henry Prendes.

Firehouse Visits

Sunday, March 11th, 2012

3-11-12It is always great to ride up to a Firehouse unannounced and to see the look on the Firefighters faces. Today I rode up with Bogart who rejoined me last night. We found the group in back waxing a very well cared for engine at Firehouse 53. This visit, along with all of the other visits I made at other Firehouses in Las Vegas and elsewhere, I find that there is a deep appreciation for the gratitude people offer.
The close bond shared by living in a Firehouse for years creates a tight knit family who look out for each other. When out on a call this is a big part of being able to work as a team to battle fires.
Today’s ride was shortened to make sure I am well rested for tomorrow’s “century.” I am looking forward to riding in near perfect weather.
