Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada

Saturday, March 10th, 2012

3-10-12While out riding, I turned into a drive to avoid traffic ahead only to realize the sidewalk was full of pedestrians so I rode further in the drive to turn around. A security guard asked where I was going. It turned out that the drive was to the Catholic Charities, so I said that I wanted to talk to who was ever in charge. He said that would be the Monsignor.
I was met in the lobby by a very interested Peggy McKenzie, who after hearing about my mission, said that she wanted me to meet with Monsignor Patrick Leary the CEO of this multipurpose facility. The Monsignor took the time to sit and talk with me about my mission and offered some sound advice for going forward with One Million Acts Of Kindness and The Kindness Bicycle Ride for Heroes. Pat Falvey, the Vice President of Development took me on a very detailed tour of this facility which offers care for anyone who needs help with the basics of a place to stay, to be fed or clothed. This facility offers so much more than just the basic necessities, with a local community struggling with many issues related to poverty. The agency encompasses many diverse programs which provide a wide range of social services designed to help people, from infants to seniors. They strive toward the goal of each individual gaining self-sufficiency, independence, and dignity. Catholic Charities has only one focus, to give help and hope to people in need, regardless of race, religion or creed.

Believe and Achieve

Friday, March 9th, 2012

3-9-12Being greeted by a sign that inspires you to “Believe” in yourself is a great way for all students to start their day at the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy in Las Vegas. This charter school which receives the State of Nevada’s highest honors year after year, helps children in this economically challenged neighborhood with what Andre considers to be the greatest impact in children’s lives, an education. With direction from The Andre Agassi Foundation, I stopped at this school and dropped off some information for Head of school, Mike Piscal. I’m hoping to stop for a quick inspiring talk during my “century” ride on Monday.
Douglas and Sherry, a husband and wife who are Army Veterans, stopped me while on my ride to inspire me with their kind thoughts for my Heroes Ride.
Craig and his wife Rhonda who are both Air Force Veterans and her parents were seated next to me at dinner. Craig has a strong work ethic and spends a lot of time volunteering, flying much needed blood components to doctors performing emergency surgeries. Rhonda is a Wounded Warrior and is competing in an upcoming Iron Girl competition. What a great group to sit next to at dinner and when I went to pay my check, I found out someone took care of it. Thank you Craig.

Great Day for a Ride

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

3-8-12Sheer perfection, that is the most fitting way to describe today’s ride. Two days of straight-line winds and gusts, as I found out, were over 80 mph. It’s no wonder that The Kindness Bicycle almost could have played a supporting role in The Wizard of Oz or more like Gone with the Wind. The front sign I fasten to the windshield of The Kindness Bus, while parked, blew away and I created a new one. The original one is probably somewhere over the Colorado Rockies. Thank you to Home Depot for donating the material for the spiffy new sign.
I was all over North Las Vegas today and stopped so many times to talk to so many very interested individuals. Pat McTigue and Arlene Henderson, two very generous REALTORS from the Las Vegas area were SO nice and cared about everything One Million Acts Of Kindness stands for and they loved The Kindness Bicycle Ride for Heroes.
Rudy, a USAF Wounded Warrior insisted on buying me breakfast at a local restaurant. He is now a Police Officer in a nearby community. He invited me to visit his station when I am in his town later next week. Thank you Pat, Arlene and Rudy for your support and interest.
Today, I decided that on Monday of next week, I will ride 101 miles, to honor Sgt. Henry Prendes, Las Vegas Metro Police Department, who lost his life in the line of duty during a Domestic Violence call. I will be riding the entire perimeter of Las Vegas, which is nearly the entire distance.

Gary Sinise Foundation

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

3-7-12Lieutenant Dan from the movie Forrest Gump is an Oscar nominated role played by actor Gary Sinise. The movie and Gary’s role is one that any of us will soon forget. A very powerful performance because of his family’s military background and Gary’s passion for those who give of their lives and some their quality of life. His website www.garysinisefoundation.org is a must visit. The following is taken directly from his website.
At the Gary Sinise Foundation, we serve our Nation by honoring our defenders, veterans, first responders, their families, and those in need. We do this by creating and supporting unique programs designed to entertain, educate, inspire, strengthen, and build communities. Gary has helped to raise millions of dollars, as well as dedicated a considerable amount of his time and personal financial resources to various military and related charities. After being contacted by numerous individuals and corporations over the years enquiring as to where would be the best place to make donations to support servicemen and their families, he realized there was a real need in community for guidance. People want to help, they just don’t know how or where to start. His purpose in creating the foundation was to provide a reliable resource for people wanting to donate to programs supporting these causes, knowing that their funds would go directly to programs and organizations that have been chosen and developed based on several years of first hand experience by a credible, respected humanitarian that has personally created and developed, or worked with each and every one of the programs. Under the umbrella of The Gary Sinise Foundation, one person is able to make a difference and join forces with a legion of supporters. “The Foundation is a strong, dependable resource to spread the ‘give-back goodness’.”  That’s what Gary Sinise wants his Foundation to do, “provide opportunities for people to give back.”
Thank you Gary and to all of those involved with this foundation.

Winds of Change

Tuesday, March 6th, 2012

The two busiest men in the State of Ohio connected with me over the past two days, Governor John Kasich and State School Superintendent Stan Heffner. Both responded to my email about the Chardon, Ohio school shooting, about One Million Acts Of Kindness and my passion for changing the mindset of students in this country by having an individual goal of kindness. I have a scheduled phone conference next Tuesday. This is huge! This is incredible! This is only the beginning!
When children take lives at school, winds of change need to howl through the educational system in our country.
Being one of the few people, perhaps the only person who has all 50 states’ plus DC’s PTA phone numbers in my phone, all 50 states plus DC’s Department of Education email contacts and US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and staff email addresses in my computer it is time to convince all 50 states that having a goal of kindness, can change kids.
Speaking of winds, gusts of 50 mph had their way with The Kindness Bicycle today. I called it a day before noon and started calls to state PTA’s across the country.
Sylvia, a local 6th grade teacher stopped by, while I was in The Kindness Bus, to learn about what she could do for her class and perhaps her entire school to embrace One Million Acts Of Kindness.  Thank you, Sylvia, not just for your attention, but also for the comforters, The Kindness Bus is quite a bit more comfortable today.

On the Corner of Paradise and Heaven

Monday, March 5th, 2012

3-5-12A friend of mine asked me today, “So Bob, where are you exactly?” On the corner of Paradise and Heaven, I replied.
It is often said that the more charity work you do, makes you feel that much closer to God. The peace I feel in my heart, because of what I do, is so incredible! Working hard all day trying to help others and hoping they find peace and comfort is very rewarding. Wanting only good for others and the entire world brings such goodness to me.
I truly am, on the corner of Paradise and Heaven.
Today’s photo is the view Bogart has been enjoying, on and off, for the past couple of months. It is where he currently is, as you can see he too is on the corner of Paradise and Heaven as well. He and I will be reunited this weekend and then head south into Arizona.

North Las Vegas

Sunday, March 4th, 2012

3-4-12The miles on The Kindness Bicycle Ride for Heroes are starting to add up, I am very near the 1,000 mile mark. It is a joy to ride in cool weather, allowing me to wear long sleeves and giving me protection from the full sun almost every day. This is a welcome change from the 50+ days of 110 degree heat index, on my 7,500 mile ride this past summer.
Wounded Warrior George, who served in the Army in Vietnam during the Tet offensive in 1968, came running up to me when I was buying some bolts for The Kindness Bicycle today. He was so excited to see The Kindness Bicycle with its Wounded Warrior sign. He thanked me several times during our conversation. I welcomed him home in case these are words he has yet to hear.
The big buzz around North Las Vegas today was an appearance by NFL quarterback, Tim Tebow. He spoke at a local church today and will again tomorrow. Tim is a huge Wounded Warrior supporter. He is building a Wounded Warrior group home in Colorado. This fine man is doing so much good for so many people.
Josh who took today’s picture is planning to skateboard to San Diego from Las Vegas. After talking with me, he has decided to do if for a worthy cause. It is amazing the good that can come from a short conversation, with the hopes of positively affecting people in very profound ways.
